Virtue Voyagers Blog: Blessed Chiara Badano

Hello, friends!

My name is Chiara Badano, and I want to tell you my story because I learned that even difficult moments can become beautiful gifts when they are given to Jesus.

I loved hiking in the mountains, swimming, roller skating, tennis, music, and laughing with my friends. I wasn’t perfect, but I wanted my life to make Jesus smile.

Have You Ever Wondered Why Bad Things Happen?

Maybe you’ve asked yourself,

“Why did this happen to me?”

“Why is life sometimes unfair?”

“Where is God when I’m hurting?”

I asked questions like that too.

One thing I discovered is that God never promises a life without suffering.

He promises that He will never leave us alone.

When we trust Him, even our hardest days can become opportunities to love.

Did I Ever Struggle?

Absolutely!

Some people think saints were always cheerful and never felt afraid.

That’s not true.

Sometimes I was disappointed.

Sometimes I felt weak.

Sometimes I didn’t understand what God was doing.

Have you ever had a day when nothing seemed to go right?

Have you ever felt left out?

Or worried about someone you love?

Or been afraid of what might happen next?

I understand.

Trusting God doesn’t mean we always understand His plan.

It means believing that His love is bigger than our fears.

Learning to Say “Yes”

When I was a young girl, I became part of a movement called the Focolare Movement, where I learned that every person I met was someone Jesus loved.

I discovered something simple but life-changing:

Love first.

Instead of waiting for people to be kind to me, I tried to be kind first.

Instead of waiting to be included, I included others.

Instead of keeping everything for myself, I shared.

Holiness often begins with one loving choice.

What Does Holiness Look Like at School?

Maybe you’re wondering,

“Can I become holy at school?”

Of course!

At school I tried to be honest.

I helped classmates who were struggling.

I respected my teachers.

I included children who were alone.

I smiled at people who looked sad.

You don’t have to perform miracles to become a saint.

Sometimes the greatest miracle is choosing love when it would be easier not to.

When My Life Changed

When I was seventeen years old, I felt a sharp pain while playing tennis.

Doctors soon discovered that I had a rare and aggressive bone cancer.

At first, I was frightened.

I cried.

My family cried.

There were many questions.

But after praying, I said something that became very important to me:

“Jesus, if You want this, then I want it too.”

That didn’t mean I enjoyed suffering.

It meant I trusted Jesus enough to place my life into His hands.

Finding Joy in the Middle of Suffering

As my illness became more difficult, many people expected me to become bitter.

Instead, I tried to keep smiling.

I welcomed visitors with joy.

I thanked the doctors and nurses who cared for me.

I encouraged my parents instead of letting them encourage only me.

People were surprised.

How could I still have hope?

Because joy doesn’t come from having an easy life.

Joy comes from knowing that Jesus is with us—even in the hardest moments.

Did My Story End There?

No.

On October 7, 1990, I went home to Heaven.

I was only eighteen years old.

Many people who knew me said they had witnessed the joy and peace that God can give to someone who completely trusts Him.

Years later, after carefully studying my life and a miracle attributed to my intercession, the Church declared me Blessed in 2010.

Today, young people around the world look to my example and remember that holiness isn’t measured by how long we live—but by how deeply we love.

But here’s the wonderful part:

God isn’t asking you to become another Chiara Badano.

He’s inviting you to become the saint He created you to be.

Questions You Might Ask Me

🤔 “What if I’m scared?”

Being brave doesn’t mean you’re never afraid.

It means choosing to trust God even when you are.

Tell Jesus exactly how you feel.

He listens.

🤔 “Why would God allow suffering?”

I don’t know every answer.

But I know this:

Jesus suffered because He loves us.

When we unite our difficulties with His, He can bring goodness, hope, and love from them.

No suffering is ever wasted in God’s hands.

🤔 “How can I become holy today?”

Start with love.

Smile at someone who needs encouragement.

Help without being asked.

Forgive quickly.

Pray honestly.

Trust Jesus with both your happy days and your difficult ones.

Holiness grows through ordinary acts of love.

This Month’s Virtue: Joyful Trust

Trust means believing that God is with you—even when life doesn’t make sense.

Joy means choosing hope because Jesus never stops loving you.

Together, joyful trust helps us face every day with courage.

Before You Continue Your Voyage…

Life won’t always be easy.

There will be days when you’re disappointed.

Days when you’re worried.

Days when things don’t go the way you planned.

When those days come, remember this:

Jesus is walking beside you.

You never have to carry your cross alone.

Every prayer, every smile, every act of kindness, and every moment of trust brings you one step closer to Him.

Your story matters.

And God can use it to bring hope to others.

A Prayer for You

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for my young friend who is reading these words today. Remind them that they are never alone. When they feel afraid, give them courage. When they feel sad, fill them with Your hope. When life becomes difficult, help them trust that You are always working for their good.

Teach them to love first, forgive quickly, serve joyfully, and smile with confidence because You are always near. May they discover that true happiness is found not in having an easy life, but in walking closely with You each day.

Help them become the wonderful saint You created them to be.

Amen.

I’ll be praying for you as you begin this month’s adventure.

Remember—

Every “yes” to Jesus is another step toward Heaven.

See you on the journey!

Your friend in Christ,

Blessed Chiara Badano
